CBS Roscommon competed in the invitational cross country event held at St
Mary’s College Galway before Christmas. Competing against schools all over
Connacht, we fielded running teams in all for events at 1st year, 2nd Year,
U-17 and Senior.
The first year event was ran over 1500m on a hilly and wet course with
almost 100 competitors taking part. Jack Murray had an excellent top 15
finish, with John O’Reilly not far behind in a tightly packed finish,
Darragh Hynes, Tomas Crean and Ben Connaughton were next across the finish
line finishing in all finishing inside the top 35. Riley Saughnessey,
Michael Corcoran and Mark O’Malley all battled strongly finishing very
respectably inside the top 50. All of our competitors finished out the
race, which was commendable given the difficult conditions and huge numbers
The second year race was a testing 3000m, and again the CBS competed
strongly in a field of close to 100 competitors again. Joey O’Malley was the
best of the bunch finishing only 20 seconds behind the winner in 13th place.
Charlie Carthy, Richard King and Kaylem Holian again finished inside the top
35. With Anthony Farrell, Michael Dunne, Michael Staunton, MJ O’Connor,
Jason Costello, Cormac Regan and Colin Walsh all finishing in the top half.
Our Best result of the day came in the U-17 event ran over 4500 meters, this
was perhaps the most competitive event with some very talented athletes
running. Brian O’Malley finished in a hugely impressive 3rd place, getting
himself a bronze medal in the process. Brian was neck and neck with the
eventual 4th place finisher coming into the final 1000m but he put on the
afterburners going up the steep hill and his competition had no answer
ensuring Brian had a podium finish. Well done to Brian and indeed all our
competitors on the day.
