The CBS began their 2017 championship campaign against Carrick on Shannon community school in windy conditions in Strokestown on Thursday February 9th.
DJ Hession got the Roscommon town side going with a well taken point. Despite opening the scoring the CBS were playing against very strong breeze and had to endure a sustained period of Carrick on Shannon pressure in the opening fifteen minutes. The Roscommon side were having great difficulty securing primary possession surrendering a lot of ball inside their own 45 metre line. This provided the Leitrim side with a strong scoring platform, which they used effectively registering 1-6 to secure an eight point lead.
In spite of this the CBS managed to weather this period, and clawed Carrick back with another well taken point from full forward DJ Hession and a fine individual goal from Darren Gately. Carrick restored their lead however with the next two scores, a goal and a point. Gately pointed again for the CBS, before Carrick tacked on a score to make it 2-7 to 2-2.
The windy conditions were proving influential with the Roscommon side doing well to stay in touching distance of the Leitrim men. Goalkeeper Ciaran Purcell pulled off a couple a fine saves to deny Carrick another goal. The CBS were a given a major boost just before half time however as Gately, proving a handful for the Carrick backs, netted again. Halftime score CBS 3-2 Carrick CS 2-9.
Now playing with the strong breeze the CBS got off to the perfect start with a point from centre forward Shane Walsh. Hession was back in the scoring mix next as he drew the CBS level, raising the green after a shot from distance slipped under the crossbar. It was a stroke of luck that the CBS thoroughly deserved. Carrick responded with next two scores to make it 2-11 to 4-3. The CBS were now marginally more dominant with some good forward play and great defensive work from the likes Karol Feerick, Thomas Higgins, Conor Gannon and Cian Kelly. Kelly was also proving a threat going forward and soon had the Roscommon side in front for the first time with a brilliant individual effort, raising the green flag for the fifth time. Things got even better for the Roscommon side minutes later as the irrepressible Gately netted again.
With the CBS four points to the good Carrick came in search of goals. Again Purcell was proving solid between the posts making another couple of great saves. Full back Anthony Gorman was dominant also. The CBS regressed slightly while trying to hold the lead in the closing stages but managed to limit the Leitrim men to two points in those closing stages. Final score CBS Roscommon 6-3 Carrick on Shannon CS 2-13.Well done to all involved, team listed below.
