Jes survive Roscommon scare

The final of the Connacht Schools Junior Cup will have a traditional look as record winners Garbally College, Ballinasloe will meet Coláiste Iognáid, The Jes, at the Sportsground next Wednesday.

The Ballinasloe school recording a convincing 31-5 win over Marist College in Garbally, while The Jes edged their way past CBS Roscommon after a thrilling encounter finished 17-14.

Garbally, who recorded six bonus-point wins in their six league fixtures, came out on top thanks to a five-try victory over Marist. Tom Fitzpatrick (2), Oisin McCormack, Padraig Flanagan and Niall Collins all touched down and Cian Treacy landed three conversions.

The other tie at Crowley Park could have gone either way as a try in the opening minutes by Luke Hurson put The Jes 5-0 to the good. The Galway school moved 12 points clear when Dara Hanrahan crossed.

But CBS were in no mood to lie down though and lock Jack Tucker crossed in the right corner. Richard Walsh’s try, converted by Mark Purcell, put CBS 14-12 ahead before MacDara ó Griofa’s fine try won it for The Jes.
