The CBS Senior rugby team recently played the Marist in Creggs, in an excellent game against the cup favourites.
An early onslaught from the Marist proved too much for the CBS as their scrum half spotted a gap in the CBS defence and went under the posts for a converted try.
Great play from the kick off by Tim Lambe and Daniel O’Neill saw Jason Hoare make a breakthrough in the Marist line. Good phases resulted in the CBS being on the Marist 5 metre line before the CBS were gifted a penalty after illegal play in the ruck from the Marist which Shane Purcell converted to bring the score line to 7-3 to the Marist after 15 minutes of the first half.
A reply from the Marist was imminent and in the 20th minute spilled ball from the CBS led to a Marist try, one positive note from the try came from the conversion attempt which was blocked down from Aodha Hession.
Excellent tackling from Cian Gately saw the CBS turn the ball over and allow Daniel O’Neill to run towards the Marist try line only to be stopped on the 5 metre line, 3 phases later the Marist again gave away a penalty for a rucking infringement in which Shane Purcell again converted to make it 12-6 after 27 minutes.
From the restart Amaury Duarte damaged his leg which forced him to be substituted for Ben McGahon. The CBS conceded another converted try just before the break to leave the score line at 19-6 at half time which could have very easily been much more if it weren’t for the constant tackling efforts of Conor Rohan.
Phase after phase from the CBS after kick off led to another 3 points being added to the board which had the score line at 19-9 after 47 minutes.
52 minutes into the match Cian Gately was forced off with a reoccurring leg injury and was to be replaced by Diarmaid Collins.
Sloppy play from CBS resulted in a converted penalty from the Marist which brought the score to 22-9 with 15 minutes remaining in the match.
An excellent kick and chase saw the Marist pinned back on their own 5 metre line which forced them to knock the ball on and resulted in an Eric O’Doherty pick up along with a killer pass which led to a try from Daire Byrne, a difficult kick, Purcell was unable to convert, score line 22-14.
65 minutes into the match constant pressure from the Marist forced the CBS to give away a penalty straight in front of the posts which was converted and brought the score line to 27-14. After huge ball carrying all day Eric O’Dohertys gas tank ran out and was replaced by the rejuvenated Amaury Duarte in the 65th minute.
With only minutes remaining the Marist decided to see the game out and go through the phased until the clock went red. A brave CBS display did not prove enough for the might of the Marist and although a valiant effort, the Marist were just the better team on the day.
