On the 6th of February 2018 the CBS travelled to Mountbellew to take on the Bish in the first round of the Championship. With a stretched panel, the CBS had to fight on against the strong favorites the Bish as having previously lost to them earlier on in the year.
A bright start to the match saw the CBS go two points up after five minutes with good forward play by Tadhg Lyons and Micheal Hussey. As emotions were high the CBS fell off the pace and failed to clear a high ball into the square which resulted in a goal for an underperforming Bish side. The Bish attack now were gaining momentum but good work from Aidan Hoare, James Connolly and Colm Lyons helped weather the storm.
With the CBS behind by a point, which could have easily been much more if not for the extraordinary shot stopping from goalkeeper David Hough. A late surge from Senan Lambe saw him drive the ball into the Bish net which allowed the CBS to go two points up at half time. Still a lot to be desired from the CBS players.
After words of wisdom from team coach Mr. Moran at half time, a rejuvenated CBS team came out with a fire lit underneath them and ran up a five-point lead through Conor Betts, Ronan McDermott and Rodhan Dowd. The CBS players began to get too comfortable with their lead and a Bish comeback was on the table as the difference was lowered to a single point.
With the CBS needing a change in order to sustain their lead, Tommy Kelehan was brought onto the scene and made an instant impact scoring a top class goal, allowing the CBS to breathe a sigh of relief.
With non-stop running from Wellington da Silva and Ethan Reilly along with precision free kick taking from Cormac Dolan enabled the CBS to run out reasonably comfortable winners in the end with a final score line of 2-5 to 1-3.
