On Tuesday last, the first year footballers made the long journey to South Sligo to take on St Attracta’s, Tubbercurry in their final league game.
Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half, the CBS were on the back foot early on with the Sligo school – backboned by fine footballers from Mayo and Sligo – who took an early six point lead. CBS battled and scored a goal from Eoghan Murray and tagged on points from David Brennan and Kevin Beirne. Attracta’s hit back and pushed the lead out to four again approaching half time but, once against the teeth of the wind, CBS rallied and finished with three unanswered points to leave the minimum between the sides at half time.
On the resumption of play, CBS took over and pressed up on the Sligo schools defence. Scores came more easily with good points from Eoghan Keaveney and Conor Grogan. Eoghan Murray scored a good goal while Rory Carty kicked some wonderful frees. Attracta’s to their credit fought back and goaled with ten minutes to go but young Croan’s defender, Ryan Hanley, pointed for the CBS to calm the nerves with one of the scores of the day.
In the end, CBS were delighted with their win and are now qualified for a Connacht league quarter final. Best for CBS on the day were Sean Rohan, Tyrone Brogan, Ryan Hanley, Rory Carthy, Rory Kilcline and Eoghan Murray. A word of thanks also goes to the parents and grandparents who made the journey from Roscommon to support the CBS. Many thanks to Mr. Noel Moran for all his work with the team.
