Junior Rugby – CBS Roscommon V St Muredach`s College

This game, played last Tuesday in Creggs, was the last round of the group stage for the Junior cup, with both sides needing a win to progress to the semi-final. This set the game up nicely as a must win. The weather was very cold and it starting snowing just before drop off, however, this didn’t do anything to dampen the enthusiasm of the players or those watching. Both teams got stuck into each other from the start. CBS had some good passages of play in the first ten minutes but failed to capitalise on them. St Muredachs opened the scoring after pouncing on a loose ball outside the CBS 22 metre line. Both teams were trying hard to manage the difficult weather conditions but there were knocks ons and mistakes as a result of it, which led to some untidy passages of play. St Muredachs were physically a bigger side and started to make gains by carrying the ball hard around the CBS rucks. This led to another St Muredachs score not long after. Credit to the CBS lads, they fought hard and got a try before half time leaving the score 14-5.

The second half started in a hugely energetic manner with the CBS lads really tackling well and not letting the Muredachs players get across the gain line. Some great pressure from more clinical kicks in behind the Murdeachs defence put them under inside their own 22.  From this through a number of phases and fancy footwork from the backs allowed CBS in for another try in the corner bringing the score to 14-10. But as the game went on the St Muredachs lads got a firm grip on the game and scored another two tries. The CBS lads worked hard and never gave up battling and did get another try near the end but this was cancelled out by another attack for Muredachs. The final score of 41-15 was not really reflective of the effort of the CBS players.

A very positive outlook is that 12 players of the CBS team are young enough for next year and will have learned a huge amount from this Junior cup campaign. These fine young players are definitely not going unnoticed by the Connacht branch and have been highlighting themselves for all the right reasons during the league and cup campaigns.
