Transition Year students participated in a Social Justice workshop last week, learning more about global issues such as migration and racism. Vicky Donnellan from The Galway One World Centre (GOWC) spoke to students about the issues facing us on a local and global level. Using interactive methods and a creative approach, she demonstrated to students the huge inequalities that exist between developing and developed countries. They outlined topics including the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Racism and Diversity, Food Security and Sovereignty, Trade and Tax Justice, Aid, Sustainability, Refuge and Asylum and the Global Debt Crisis.
The aim of the talk was to educate our students about equality of rights, opportunities and respect. She showed them the suitcases and bags used by child refugees, which had a powerful impact. Overall, it was a hugely educational and eye-opening workshop. Many thanks to speaker Vicky Donnellan.
