CBS Roscommon Transition Year Students are this year taking part in the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad with Ms Egan. This is a problem-solving challenge where students practice decoding language patterns without any previous knowledge of that language. On 26th September, European Day of Languages we started with puzzles in Slovenian, and Georgian and this week we looked at Swedish, Danish and Japanese puzzles. We even decided some text from the ancient Oscan language which is related to old Latin. It all sounds impossible, but we have really surprised ourselves. The key is learning to see patterns in the language. Students thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.
