The CBS Roscommon has continued its Mentoring Programme for First Year students, with the aim of familiarising new students with life within the CBS school community, and to help ease their transition from primary school to secondary school.
The role of the Transition Year student mentors is to liaise with their assigned First-Year students, helping them to feel comfortable in their new surroundings. They are tasked with checking in with them on a regular basis.
The Transition Year students are each assigned first year students to mentor. They will schedule time to meet with their students, as well as being available to them whenever they have questions about everyday issues relating to school life.
This initiative ensures that each first year has a friend within the school who can show them the ropes and help them with minor queries. This is the second year of the programme, and with the added anxiety of returning to school, it was felt that it was needed now more than ever. It will also encourage leadership skills within the TYs. Many thanks to Ms Reale and Ms Buckley for putting together and implementing the programme.
