Last Friday TY students from the 4E class participated in a coaching and referee course from Ollie Lennon of Roscommon GAA. They learned a variety of regulations, including the rules of the black yellow and red cards when to give them and when not to; the rule of the mark and the rule of frees and where to stand for them.
Students also learned how to interact with children while training them, using encouragement and positive reinforcement, rather than criticising or shouting. Ollie highlighted the importance of treating everyone equally, and dealing with players in a positive, encouraging way, discouraging all forms of negative behaviour on the pitch. He told them this would help them find a love for the game and encourage them to keep it up all the way to senior level hopefully. The students really enjoyed this and they hope to be able to use this in the future. (article by Liam Og Corcoran)
